When it comes to restaurants in East Tamaki, Lone Star Botany stands out not only for its legendary flavours but also for the adventurous spirit of its operator, Raman Sethi. Having been with the Lone Star family for nearly two years, Raman brings with him a wealth of experience, a passion for hospitality, and a life story as diverse as the menu he proudly serves.

A Global Journey Before Lone Star

Before stepping into the role of running a restaurant in East Tamaki, Raman’s professional journey took him across industries, borders, and cultures. He began humbly, working in a gas station and a liquor store, before taking a leap of faith and purchasing an old Four-Square. The store needed serious revitalisation, and Raman rose to the challenge, transforming it into a successful business.

But business wasn’t his only passion. Over six years, he travelled extensively, living in four countries and visiting more than 40 others. Along the way, he immersed himself in cultures, people, and—most importantly—food. His travels inspired him to dream of one day opening a restaurant in New Zealand that celebrated global flavours. While that particular dream didn’t materialise at the time, fate had something else in store.

In 2023, after returning to New Zealand for family reasons, Raman discovered Lone Star Botany, located right by Botany Mall food outlets. The restaurant’s lively atmosphere and emphasis on authentic hospitality aligned perfectly with his own values. He knew he had found the right place to bring together his passion for culture, cuisine, and community.

What Makes Lone Star Special

Ask Raman what makes Lone Star unique, and his answer comes quickly: “It’s the family atmosphere. Lone Star has an authenticity that welcomes everyone—no matter their background. It’s fresh, it’s familiar, and it celebrates diversity in a way few other restaurants in East Tamaki do.”

He also highlights the brand’s distinctive cowboy spirit, which resonates with guests in an urban setting. With country music playing in the background and hearty Kiwi-inspired meals served with flair, Lone Star creates a space where people can connect, celebrate, and feel at home.

Standing Out From the Rest

Raman believes Lone Star differs from other New Zealand brands through its delicious cuisine, vibrant culture, and passionate franchisees who live and breathe hospitality. From birthdays to casual nights out, Lone Star Botany has become a place where memories are made, and guests keep coming back not just for the food, but for the feeling.

Raman’s Go-To Meal

When asked about his favourite dish, Raman admits he used to love the classic Deer John with jus. But recently, he’s been enjoying the Stir Crazy Sirloin, paired with potato bake and seasonal vegetables. “It’s a beautiful balance,” he says, “especially with a glass of Ink Shiraz or Saddleback Pinot Noir.”

A Trailblazer at Heart

For Raman, Lone Star Botany is more than just a restaurant East Tamaki locals visit for hearty meals—it’s the culmination of years of risk-taking, learning, and following his adventurous spirit. From winemaking studies in Blenheim to running businesses and travelling the world, his story is proof that every step leads to new opportunities.
